Sultry Nights At The Echo: Passion Pit & King Khan
You could smell the hype in the air. Without hardly any room to walk, the Echoplex was salivating for the headlining group. I was on the decks, the only person lit up in the suitably dark warehouse space. Continue reading

Local Realization: Two Bands Named After Silverlake Watering Holes
By Diana B. Goode One day before calling on the Silverlake Lounge for a gig, I visited the local Silversun. “Could this be where the dreamy indie rock act Silversun Pickups got their name?” I pondered. “Yes, Diana, it is,” … Continue reading

If you can afford the plane ticket to Austin, accommodations, and a now $400 music badge, you may be well on your way to attending SXSW 2009. The music performance schedule has just been released and with only weeks to go, the pilgrimage to Austin is about to begin. Continue reading
Friday the 13th: Cover Band Names That Will Make You Scream
With Friday the 13th and Valentine’s Day running back to back this year, I started thinking about My Bloody Valentine (the band, not the slasher film of course) and the ultimate question: Do My Bloody Valentine cover bands exist? In the past, I have seen bands pull off some brilliant covers (“Only Shallow” for example); however, I pondered if groups dedicated themselves to the shoegaze legends. Continue reading

Lady Sovereign Live in LA and My First Experience as a Grime DJ
I knew I was in for an interesting night when I walked into the Echo and found the English rapper Lady Sovereign sound checking to a near empty room. I put down my gear and watched the panda hat-wearing performer casually perform a few lines from “Love Me Or Hate Me.” I was trying to keep my cool. Continue reading

Lady Sovereign “The Biggest Midget in the Game” Hits Los Angeles Tomorrow
By Diana B. Goode Something big has changed. The chavy, oddly precocious Lady Sovereign has (gasp) grown up. Barely a year ago, Lily Allen reported on her myspace blog that Lady Sovereign, the pint-sized MC, planned some major trouble for … Continue reading

The Kills Announce US Spring Tour (Hopefully Their Gear Won’t Be Stolen This Time)
By Diana B. Goode Even if it means dishing out a little extra cash, hire people who are dependable. Hopefully that’s what the London-based duo the Kills learned from their visit to America in September 2008 when their bus driver … Continue reading

Likely Suspects at Coachella 2009: The Smiths
Although I would journey hundreds of miles to see the newly reunited Blur, I do not think they are big enough to headline Coachella on Saturday. Nor do I think the lineup as it stands is sufficient enough to draw a massive festival crowd. The Killers? Please. For those of us (me) who will not likely attend all three dates, Friday is the obvious choice with Paul McCartney topping the bill and the organizers behind Coachella must know this. This is why I cannot accept the Saturday lineup as is.
Weighing all the rumors, there is one that I keep revisiting: the curious liklihood of the Smiths reuniting. Continue reading
